When to do a QI/Audit?

QI

Where recognition of an improvement has been recognised through clinical evidence. This could form part of the auditing cycle – Audit conducted, identified potential area of practice that could be improved, create action to enact change e.g teaching session, leaflet, referral system change, follow up booking change. This can then be re-audited after the improvement is actioned upon thus ‘closing the loop’.

Audit

Audits are regularly conducted for the purpose of assessing current practice. These are done monthly/bimonthly in wards with standard audits such as a VTE audit for example. These are usually easy to close the loop as they are already conducted regularly and have easy changes to implement. Audits in departments you currently or are going to work in make things easier, for instance when implementing change or recognising useful audits to conduct. It will also allow you to get support more easily from colleagues and seniors as they are on the ward and in that specialty with you.

Audits and QI projects are completed in most healthcare settings and therefore there is always opportunity to lead and complete one with a supervisor
